5 years on Twitter

Scroll down for the Tl;DR version.

It may look a bit silly. Why would you write about your anniversary that you’re 5 years on Twitter?

Well, for me it is a nice moment to look back and to see what I have accomplished so far. Thanks to Twitter I have done things that I wouldn’t imagine doing without.

Five years ago I signed up for Twitter. For more than 4 years my username was @simonvreeman. Last year I changed it to a sorter version. @vreeman.

5 years ago, I was in my first year of my study Business Information Technology at Windesheim. It wasn’t my thing. Too much about sustaining what is good and not so much about innovation. So I quit.

I had no idea what kind of study I would like to do next, so I went to the USA with two good friends to work, think and have a good time.  Away from the daily routine back home. We had a great time and spend the last days in NYC. Regularly I talk with my buddies about our USA trip. We still have some good memories.

Then I started a study Technical Business Engineering at Hogeschool Utrecht. Great study, but didn’t finish it either. But thanks to Twitter I found two great internships.

First at Budeco. A young and small Business Development Company. I had a great time there and shortly after my internship I started working there part-time.

The second internship was at a big technical consultancy firm Movares. With loads of internal politics we manage to develop a brand new WordPress website. The internal politics is not my thing, but it was fascinating to see and deal with it. I learned a lot.

Besides just studying and other stuff that students do, I went on 2 study trips. To Dubai and Hong Kong. At both trips I met someone I already knew via Twitter. Both time I had a great conversation accompanied with a nice cup of coffee. Awesome stories and great insight about the city.

Although the study was interesting and had a great time there it still wasn’t my thing. My motivation and energy drained away. I quit. Again.

Together with Coen Jacobs I started a small company, how I knew via Twitter. Via Twitter I also got in touch with the GM of Van der Valk Internet. I started working there too.

What’s next?

To be honest. I don’t know. I really curious if Twitter still exist in the next five year. Or what else we can expect. Singularity? We will see. Today I really enjoy my work at Budeco and Van der Valk and when there is time left to work on WPspecialist.

I learned that I have to follow my heard, do the things that give you the energy to step out of your bed and stay curious.

Or to quote Steve Jobs

Jack Dorsey – The Power of Curiosity and Inspiration

For some reason, WordPress.com doesn’t allow me to insert some simple JavaScript code to embed the video of Jack Dorsey. So I have to give you a link to Stanford University’s Entrepreneurship Corner.

Square and Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey is an entrepreneur driven by an innate curiosity to create amazing products and services. In this insightful lecture, Dorsey describes his early background and inspirations, the current focuses he keeps as a CEO, and his desire to create memorable experiences and solve problems.

How to revoke access to Twitter and Facebook apps

Facebook and Twitter are both great social networks and I use them a lot to say in touch with friends and family. I also use applications that require a connection with Facebook or Twitter. For instance, Klout, Farmville and Foursquare. Sometimes I also connect with an app I use just for one time. Because I want to try it, or it’s funny, or I use it not any more, or I can win a prize. Like the KLM world deal campaign.

But when you stop using that third-party app. The connection between that app and Facebook or Twitter remains intact. So those third parties can still access your account. And that could be dangerous. If, for some reason, they turn evil, they can use your data for some nasty things or sell it to other companies. To make sure that the third-party will not use my Facebook or Twitter account, you have to revoke the access for that app. I’ll explain short how you can revoke access to Twitter and Facebook applications.

3 years on Twitter!

Happy birthday! I am 3 years on Twitter! 3 years of joys and sorrows. Sharing stuff that is worth sharing.

Twitter is for my a great why to meet new people, learn from everybody, get inspired and get to know the latest news. I even got my internship at Budeco via Twitter. So Twitter is not just telling about what you’re eating it is also connecting with people and get an internship. ;)

In those 3 years I got about 1300 followers and I follow almost 1000 tweeps. I post about 10.000 tweets a years. Also Klout got some stats about my Twitter account. My Klout score is 46 and according to them I am a Specialist. The explanation for Specialist is:

You may not be a celebrity, but within your area of expertise your opinion is second to none. Your content is likely focused around a specific topic or industry with a focused, highly-engaged audience.

Well, I kinda like that explanation and I think it’s right. I tweet a lot about WordPress, SEO, social media and related subjects.

I am looking forward to at least 3 more years on Twitter! At least 3 more years of joys and sorrows. I hope to learn more, get inspired and get to know more people. Thanks you for these 3 years! Do you already follow me on Twitter? :) @simonvreeman
Or congratulate me!
